Count me as one of those who love Self Portrait, and I LIKE Bob Johnson's production . The original album is uh ... uneven to be certain, with some real weird, and questionable choices ( the double track version of Paul Simon's "The Boxer" is a huge lapse in taste and reason, as they say these days , WTF?) . I have always wonders why they decided to stick with the double album concept .The core songs would still have pisse people off back then ( Dylan claims he was trying to get people off his back, and not look to him to be some sort of leader), but It would have held up better . He really sings his ass of on some of this, he is not tossing it off (check his singing on "Copper Kettle" , or "Belle Isle", wish he could sing like that now !) . My guess is that he lost interest in the project , and Bob Johnson tried to salvage it .
This all good news, though I wish they would remaster the actual album as well . I have long though they should put out the Isle of Wight show, it didn't sit well with fans at the time, but this is the Band when they sound most like they did on "Big Pink" , real staggering, sort of weird sounding . That drunk sounding "Mighty Quinn" has always been a favorite . The "I threw it all away" is wonderful .
Thanks for the recon !

The deluxe set will contain Self Portrait remastered!!

There are bound to be lots of bootlegged takes that aren't on this bit I think it looks interesting.

I expect there may be some revelatory outtakes, as usual for Dylan...there are lots of outtakes for Self Portrait & New Morning (mostly covers) that haven't been heard. (Although, most of the ones that have been heard are not so great.) If there's anything else like the solo piano Spanish Is The Loving Tongue, that'll be worth the set in itself.
Apparently Dylan really did do a session or two of just vocal & acoustic, like in the old days, so that will certainly be interesting to hear. But he had no involvement in the later Self Portrait overdubs at all.

That Spanish is the Loving Tongue, is one of the great "never on cd" , tracks .
I am real curious what this set will contain .

Thanks for the info . Looks great . But... the price tag for the deluxe edition, $140, for 4 cds !... That May 77 set seems reasonable .

I'm excited - this could be better than the actual album.
Or it could be lazy toss-offs... We'll see!

I see the 4-CD deluxe edition is available for preorder for a mere $140. Sigh...

Check Amazon Canada. It was way cheaper than Amazon US.

It will be nice to hear some of the Self Portrait performances without overdubs. Even though a lot of the recordings are rough and under-rehearsed, I think they're made quite silly at times by the overdubs. I wonder if the album would have been more popular at the time if it had just been the basic recordings. Probably not...
